Certified Trauma Professional (CTP)

A CTP therapist has undergone an approved training course over the elements essential to evidenced-based trauma treatment. Clinicians then learn applicable ways to integrate a comprehensive trauma approach into their practice. Thus, trauma treatment becomes more competent and effective.

Core elements included in a CTP training include:

  • Assessment of indicators for unprocessed traumatic memories

  • Signals of hyper and hypoarousal (our body’s internal threat response system)

  • An evidence based three-phase model for trauma treatment: stabilization, processing, and re-integration

  • Somatic interventions (internal work such as breathing) clients can use when dysregulated, distressed, or when their threat response system is aroused

  • Understand when a client is equipped to move into the traumatic processing stage, which is helpful to maintain safety and stabilization within the client

  • Evaluation of signs of progress during traumatic processing

  • Differentiate the benefits and drawbacks of different therapeutic approaches (CBT, IFS, EMDR, etc.) in order to implement the most beneficial treatment approach for the client.
